Blue Mountains- September 2019
Images from a September 2019 hiking trip to the Blue Mountains with my walking group.
Images from a walking trip to Larapinta, Northern Territory, Australia. Six days of hiking in a harsh and ancient landscape in central Australia, near Alice Spings- mostly extremely hot during the day, freezing at night. Hardly any wildlife to be seen, a handful of rockwallabys, very few birds, no lizards, but an army of flies. #larapinta #alicesprings #centralaustralia #northernterritory

Ariel's Walk, The Sphinx to Brooklyn
Images from a four day hike from the Sphinx to Brooklyn, that included Mount Kuringai, Berowra, Cowan and Brooklyn. On the third day we substituted a walk from Hornsby to Thornleigh instead of Berowra to Cowan as the heat and the smoke from the NSW fires made conditions uncomfortable.

Darwin to Uluru via Cairns all species and full collection
This portfolio shows a wider selection of images, a greater variety of shots and poses, including those shown in the original, similarly titled portfolio. It would not have been possible to create these images without the contribution of Laurie Ross.
Photos from a hike in January 2024 with members of our bushwalking group on the Three Capes Track in Tasmania.
Adelaide to Perth across the Nullarbor
Images, mainly of birds, from a trip with Laurie Ross of Tracks Birding in May 2023. Starting in Adelaide (in South Australia) we travelled to Port Augusta, Ceduna, Nullarbor roadhouse, Norseman, Stirling Ranges Retreat, Cheynes Beach, Margaret River and finally Perth in Western Australia. We covered 4 689.5 kms, over 14 days, somewhat more than the 2 683 kms direct route suggested by Google Maps. While I pressed the shutter, Laurie found the birds and put us in a position to take a photograph and I took plenty! Laurie, thank you!
Images from a weekend at Pumphouse Point, Lake St Clair, Tasmania at the end of the Overland Track, taken in March 2023 and a few images from Coles Bay, Tasmania from a few weeks previously.
Images from a birding trip with Ian (Sav) Saville of Wrybill Birding to South Island, New Zealand. We started in Christchurch and emerged 12 days later in Queenstown. #wrybillbirding #birds #southisland
Birding in northern Queensland
Images from a trip to Cairns, the Atherton tablelands, and the Cape York Peninsula, including Musgrave, Lockhart River and Kutani-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park in Queensland in May 2022. Laurie Ross, owner and bird-photography guide at Tracks Birding and Photography Tours is one of Australia's leading bird finders and photographers. He is responsible for finding the birds and putting me in the best position to capture an image. I acknowledge his huge contribution to this set of images.
On 14 September 2016, the residents of Sydney turned out in force in the eastern suburbs of Sydney to watch the Supermoon rise over the sea. The view from Bronte was poor with clouds and the landmass blocking the view. Nontheless, residents went about their activities and enjoyed the evening. #supermoon, #bronte, #surfing, #jackhochfeldphotography, #inspiredbylife
Darwin to Uluru, via Cairns: all species limited selection
Images from a birding to trip to the Northern Territory of Australia, with Sally and our bird guide Laurie Ross. The original intention was to travel from Darwin to Uluru, but Covid lockdowns prevented us from reaching Alice and going onward to Uluru. We diverted instead to Cairns in Queensland. We covered close to 6 500 kilometres in two weeks and identified 258 different species, 87 of them new to us. I have included a limited selection of the species I photographed, but will create a larger portfolio selection, showing a wider variety of shots and poses. I am most grateful to Laurie for every aspect of the trip and dedicate this collection to him.
Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road
Images from a trip to Melbourne, Heron and Wilson Islands, Australia in 2005
A pair of powerful owls and their chicks had been spotted in Centennial Park. Sally wanted to see them.
Shapes and shadows- the Blue Mountains Shapes and shadows change with each step, the wind whispering through the gently swaying trees. The stream swooshes, snakes and carves it's way through the sandstone, creating a canyon in its wake, with steep sides, micro climates and breathtaking beauty. The whispy-veil waterfall floats to the ground, moistening the air and feeding the flourishing greenery, yet the forest panorama is tinged with blue. The air is sweet and fresh, the light dappled through the growth. The clean crisp cry of a bird heard but not seen and then a bright red flash against the green. The rhythm of our steps and breath, get shorter as we ascend, our feet heavier, our hearts lighter. Two lyre birds are courting, a challenger chased off. He promises her riches and shiny wealth but she knows he's a liar and cannot believe a note he sings.
Images from a trip to Lady Elliot Island in Queensland. Lady Eliot is the most southerly coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef. Images of beaches and birds, sea and sand, turtles and terrific scenery.
