Old Sarum, near modern Salisbury in Wiltshire, England, is the site of an Iron Age hill fort and a Norman castle and cathedral, forming the original settlement of Salisbury before the city moved to its current location. The site combines layers of history, from its origins as a fortified settlement around 400 BC, through Roman and Norman periods, to its final abandonment in the 16th century. It was a significant political and religious center, famous for its castle and the first Salisbury Cathedral, before the cathedral's move to the valley in the 1220s due to the windy conditions and lack of water at the hilltop.
